After my bike crash
No sob story or long story here now. Just to say that I crashed badly at Ironman Canada on August 26, 2005. Front wheel problem, so did a major endo at 30 mph downhill. Broke many ribs front and back, punctured lung, top of scapula broken out and clavicle broken, unconscious. Spent four days enjoying Canadian healthcare up close and personal, then home (thanks to my heroic Sherry) to Glen Ellyn for surgery on September 13. Now sport a titanium plate and five screws across my right clavicle.
The good news is the intensive physical therapy continues and is getting great results. My long run is up to 14 miles, I am swimming masters including butterfly, and have been spinning hard since a month after surgery. I will race a half marathon in five weeks, Boston in nine weeks and am signed up for Ironman Canada for the ninth time this coming August.
With hard work, old guys can heal...so well that the surgeon (Marc Asselmeir, himself a marathoner) will call you his "rock star" and be amazed at what you can do!
